YouTurn students have constructed nine scooter boards for Barwon Valley School. Barwon Valley School is a specialist disability school for children with moderate to profound intellectual disabilities, some whom also have a physical disability. The scooter boards are designed to enable children with disabilities to develop their strength, co-ordination and sensory skills as well as increasing the student’s quality of life.
Bunnings North Geelong kindly donated some of the materials required for the construction of the boards. The students developed the template for the scooter board’s shape. The students rough cut the shapes first and then used the template to finalise the shaping of the boards with a router. The look of the boards was completed with more routing and some sanding.
Once painted, the students created a series of individualised stencils to be spray painted onto the faces of the boards. The students had free reign to create the stencil designs. Once the boards were painted and stencilled, castors were bolted on.
The school has since reported that they are very happy with the scooter boards and are using them regularly.
