Northern Community Hub Design

The Northern Community Hub has been designed by Third Ecology Architects, a locally based award winning sustainable architecture firm who were chosen for their knowledge and skills in ecologically sustainable and environmentally friendly designs. The facility has been designed to greatly reduce energy and water consumption costs and be a healthy environment for staff and community groups to work in.

The building principles are based on key sustainability features covering energy, water, materials and waste include:
•    Passive solar design to maximize natural light, heating and cooling to create high levels of occupant comfort as well as reduce energy costs and minimize CO2 emissions and the effects of climate change
•    The extensive use of energy efficient appliances, fixtures and fittings such as lighting, heating and cooling systems and office equipment
•    Rainwater harvesting for all non potable water supply needs, thus reducing mains water use by up to 80% inside the building
•    The extensive use of 4 and 5 star water efficient taps, toilet facilities and other water consuming appliances
•    Materials that are lower in embodied energy, healthier for building occupants and have a lower overall ‘footprint’ than similar standard equivalents
