Volunteer at a Homework Club
Volunteer Tutors are given training prior to undertaking their roles. All volunteer tutors must have a Working with Children Check and current Police Check before they are able to tutor in the program.
Northern Bay Wexford Campus Homework Club
Diversitat and Northern Bay College agreed a homework club would be a beneficial program to introduce for students who had recently arrived in Australia. At around the same time, Diversitat was approached by students and teachers from Sacred Heart, St Josephs, Clonard and Geelong College, who were interested in helping tutor students from refugee backgrounds. As a result, the Homework Club was born.
The program brings together students from the four schools who, together with Diversitat volunteers, provide literacy and numeracy support to newly arrived students at the Wexford Campus of Northern Bay College.
Volunteers help coordinate the program and ensure students receive the support they require within the literacy field, while secondary school tutors provide support with regards to numeracy.
Approximately 30 students of refugee background are now registered to receive support from the unique club, which runs every Monday during school term. The program sees about 14 secondary school students and 10 Diversitat volunteers attend weekly tutoring sessions.
This rewarding program which encourages peer-to-peer support, would not be possible without collaboration and assistance from a number of volunteers and agencies.
