Geelong’s first LGBTIQ Event for Seniors

The annual ‘Geelong Seniors Festival’ had a massive first in 2019! Diversitat Aged Support and Geelong Rainbow Inc worked collaboratively to create Geelong’s first ever LGBTIQ Senior’s event, as part of the month long festival on Sunday 6th October at Geelong Arts Centre. The aim of the event, to provide a lovely social opportunity for LGBTIQ Elders and friends in our region, along with an opportunity to find out about services in the area that could provide support.

The ‘Rainbow Friendly Afternoon at Geelong Arts Centre’ included an incredible performance by He’s Every Woman – “celebrating the Diva’s who have walked among us” – followed by a LGBTIQ Care & Ageing Support Information Expo, with afternoon tea and entertainment by the talented Joss, from Piano Bar Geelong. It was a jam packed warm and supportive Sunday afternoon.

Justin and Jamie, He’s Every Woman, were incredible. Such a wonderfully entertaining hour of power ballads, party songs and Proud Mary’s; with special guest appearances by Cher and Celine Dion! The crowd sang, danced, laughed and cried together – as the gifted singers and performers took them on an emotional and engaging journey. If the opportunity presents itself, I highly recommend you head along to their show. A heart felt thankyou to Justin and Jamie, we loved having you.

After the show, everyone moved out to the foyer where the LGBTIQ Care and Ageing Information Expo was set up, along with a light afternoon tea and entertainment by Joss – Piano Bar Geelong. Organisations & Services that took part in the Expo included: City of Greater Geelong – Healthy Communities and Community Care Services & Older Population, Dementia Australia, Elders Rights Advocacy, Carers Victoria, Switchboard, Barwon Community Legal Service, Diversitat Aged Support & Geelong Rainbow Inc. To all of you, thank you very much for supporting this initiative – especially on a Sunday!

Finally, Diversitat Aged Support & Geelong Rainbow Inc, would like to say a massive thankyou to the Geelong Arts Centre, City of Greater Geelong and the Victorian State Government for supporting our vision; and providing us with a fabulous venue, and grant funds to help with event costs; enabling this to be a free event for participants. It was a great first turn out, and we look forward to many more to come.
