Diversitat Aged Support recently celebrated a year in our new home – the Healthy Living Centre is one year old!
Our staff, volunteers and clients have achieved great things, and created wonderful memories – during a jam packed year of fun and supports; based out of our new purpose built building. We have formed a whole lot of new friendships, welcomed many new clients and volunteers, hired new wonderful staff, and said goodbye to some fabulous people also. Accolades a plenty, and a Victorian Multicultural Commission award received, new programs created, and old ones expanded. Cultural celebrations, outings, dancing, singing, cooking, eating, laughter, exercise, games played and stories told; are a daily event at the Healthy Living Centre – how lucky are we?!
During the past year our clients have gone on many fabulous outings – Morning Melodies, The Geelong Show, You Yang’s, Geelong Port Program, The Cuckoo restaurant for Christmas in July, Morning teas and lunches at Cafes & Restaurants in Geelong, Ballarat, Bellarine and the Surfcoast regions, Botanical Gardens visits, 10 Pin Bowling, Shopping, many cultural celebrations, and the list goes on. They have engaged in a plethora of activities – carpet bowls, mini golf, choir training, Bollywood dance, Yoga & Meditation, art & craft, cooking, light exercise, life story writing, again the list goes on. As well as receiving health and service information (form guest speakers) by external allied health and service providers – Nutrition, Memory Help, Dementia Awareness, Bone & Joint Health, Elders Rights Advocacy, Assessment Services, Centrelink Assets, gifting and carer payments. Our clients have also helped shape/create our programs by individually telling us what they would like to do within their groups, and received outstanding care and supports by staff, students and volunteers.
A word from Robyn Martinez, Diversitat Aged Support General Manager:
“The time has flown. We have done some extraordinary work and made some interesting changes to what we do and how we do it. We have got really comfortable – furniture, massage chair, aroma therapy, plants, cushions, music players, and food glorious food. We love the form and function of our facility – it’s nice to exercise in, listen to talks in, do training in, play games in etc. We have the Frog Drum water feature graciously acknowledging the traditional owners of the land and our own dear Karen and Karenni clients (and a VMC award). We have created the immediate garden area, deck garden and fencing. We have run great events – especially our legendary Grand Opening, Tomato & Chilli Competition, Christmas Party, Café Style Support, Fun Expo, Friday Meals Program, Geelong Seniors Festival event.
We remain professional and focussed on client individual goals and outcomes. We have welcomed many other users and services – Diversability, ACAS team, RAS team, TAC, community groups, Geelong Rainbow Inc., Bringing them Home group from Wathaurong, Job Wise/Generator, Youth – cert III Horticulture students, justice groups, Carmel’s gawaiting some.roups and Dianna’s meetings, and Barwon Community Legal Service. We run a large yoga group most Wednesdays, this has been so well received. We’ve made relationships with other Hub groups – Men’s shed, Spanish club, English programs, family services, the gardeners in Hope garden etc. We kept Camille so busy we had to get Raji. We kept Lloyd so busy we had to get another admin worker, Shinney. We’ve done training, CIMS, Trauma, creating new activities, Leisure and Health, Management and Leadership, Dementia etc. We’ve put in for funds and awards, won some, lost some –
Thanks always to our busy committed team of Admin, Kitchen staff, Project Workers, Activity Workers, students and volunteers. Thank you to you all for making the first year in our Healthy Living Centre happen so magnificently. Our clients are happy, safe and in good hands in a state of the art environment.”
What a year, what a centre, what a clientele base, what a team! Cheers to many more years ahead.
