The Self-care group has been formed by a group of approximetly 20 young participants from Northern Bay School between 16 – 20 years old.
The Self-care group is the continuation of the Renew project designed in 2018 between Diversitat and Headspace to address concerns that young people from refugee backgrounds and their families tend not to seek early intervention and prevention support from mental health services.
Former participants have collaborated in recruiting new participants through school and community connections. The main aim of this new group is to extend awareness of mental health issues to other young people and open up more and new conversations about mental health issues at individual, family and community level and the support services that are available.
The group has started meeting fortnightly from April 2019, alternating mental health education sessions and recreational/well being activities such as Ultimate Frisbee, Badminton, Yoga, Hip Hop dancing and more.
The Self Care group is supported by Yineth Moreno, Diversitat’s Mental Health & Multicultural Worker and Sheldan Alexander, Headspace’s Youth Engagement worker in partnership with Janelle Hearn, CALD Community Worker at Northern Bay School.
